The skin is the largest organ in the human body and performs many functions. It regulates our body temperature through sweating to reduce heat and constricting pores, goose bumps, to reduce heat loss.
The skin has five main functions:
Barrier
It acts as a mechanical barrier in that it prevents bacteria and viruses from entering the body. Langerhans cells which are found within the dermis, engulf and destroy invaders and matter foreign to the body. It also has a waterproof barrier formed by sebum and keratin layers in the upper surface of the skin. In addition the skin has Melanocytes which are cells that protect us from ultraviolet light.
Vitamin D
Skin produces Vitamin D in the presence of sunlight and ultra violet radiation needed for the absorption of calcium and phosphate.
Temperature regulation
Your skin regulates body temperature. Considerable heat is lost through the skin. Even under extreme conditions of high temperature and exercise, our skin tends to make body temperature normal. The production (evaporation) of sweat in the skin cools us down when exposed to too much heat.
Information
Nerve endings in the skin provide the sense of touch, temperature and sensation thereby providing up information about our immediate surrounding and environment.
Waste Removal
The skin also removes waste product and excess salt from the body though sweating. Sweat includes waste products in solution.
Skin with blocked and clogged pores is unhealthy is not just a beauty problem. Proper care of your skin is important not only to your personal beauty but also to overall health. Taking care of your skin now will pay off as you grow older retaining its suppleness and luster.
